The Hole Truth is an interactive work of public sculpture created by Mickael Broth (aka The Night Owl) specifically for The Valentine Museum in Richmond, Virginia. The piece was commissioned by the museum and the Common Wealth Public Art Fund, with support from the City of Richmond’s Public Art Commission and City Council. The work invites visitors to consider the ways in which we personally shape the stories we tell about ourselves, and how that innate human instinct impacts our understanding of ourselves and our collective memory when those stories become “history.” The reflective faces of the work allow viewers to see themselves and their surroundings without the ego of the self, while the sleek, contemporary forms re-contextualize the deeply historic setting in which they are installed. While the work offers opportunity for serious reflection, it also serves as a lighthearted and humorous way for people of all ages to engage with the art. The work exists in two sizes in order to provide accessibility for as many different audiences as possible, and its placement directly at ground level is intended as a counterpoint to the imbalanced power dynamic of the classical figure-on-a-pedestal-style monument.
